What is chronological age?
Chronological age (CA) is the amount of time that has passed since a person was born, written in years, months and days. In testing it is often shown as years;months – for example 7;4 means 7 years and 4 months. Test manuals use the chronological age to find the right norms table.
How to calculate chronological age by hand
Write the test date and the birth date as year, month, day and subtract from right to left:

- If the test day is smaller than the birth day, borrow 1 month = 30 days.
- If the test month is smaller than the birth month, borrow 1 year = 12 months.
This “borrow 30 days” method is the standard in most test manuals, and it is what this calculator uses.
Rounding the chronological age
Many tests ask you to round days to the nearest month; others say to never round. Common rules are “round up when days are 15 or more” or “16 or more”. Choose the rule from your test manual in the calculator – when in doubt, follow the manual, not the calculator default.
Where is chronological age used?
- Speech-language pathology (SLP) assessments
- Psychological and educational tests (for example IQ, achievement and developmental tests)
- Pediatric and developmental screenings such as the ASQ
- Sports age groups and school entry cut-off dates
For babies born early, many developmental tests use the adjusted (corrected) age instead.

Frequently asked questions
Is chronological age the same as age?
Yes. “Chronological” just means counted by the calendar, as opposed to developmental, mental, biological or adjusted age.
Why does my result differ by a day from another calculator?
Some calculators borrow the real number of days in the previous month instead of 30. Our general age calculator uses real calendar months; this page uses the 30-day testing convention.
